Cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders involving the brain and the  nervous system functions such as movement, hearing, seeing.

The term cerebral refers to the brain and palsy refers to  paralysis or lack of control with one's body. It is a disability resulting from injury to the brain before, during or shortly after birth. Approximately 8,000 infants born in the United States are diagnosed with cerebral palsy each year.

Cerebral palsy is caused when there is an injury to the baby’s brain, resulting in damage to the motor control centers.  There is no cure for cerebral palsy, and a child with cerebral palsy often requires a lifetime of medical care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and special assistance.  Naturally, the cost of caring for a child with cerebral palsy can be very expensive, more than most families can easily afford.

Cerebral palsy affects the nerves that regulate and control the body’s muscles. The literal meaning of the word cerebral is the brain’s two halves and palsy describes any disorder that impairs control of body movement. When there is faulty development or damage to motor areas, as in cerebral palsy, it disrupts the brain’s ability to control movement and posture sufficiently.

People with cerebral palsy must endure extremely difficult medical, social, and educational development. There are four main categories of cerebral palsy, including spastic cerebral palsy, athetoid cerebral palsy, ataxic cerebral palsy, and mixed cerebral palsy.
